Pelting (Rami) times during Hajj

Q. What are the times of stoning during the days of Hajj? Some people were saying that stoning should be done after sunrise and some were saying that it should be done after Zawwal. I stoned after sunrise on the 10th & after Zawwal on the 11th & 12th. I did not stone on the 13th. Is my stoning counted as valid?

A. Pelting is compulsory (Waajib) during three days of Hajj, the 10th, 11th and 12th of Zul-Hijjah.

The times for pelting are as follows:

1) 10th– Sunnah time –  After sunrise till zawwal

Makrooh time – After dawn till sunrise

2) 11th & 12thSunnah time – After zawwal till sunset

Makrooh time – After sunset of the 11th & 12th  till dawn of the 12th/13th

Pelting on the 13th of Zul-Hijjah only becomes compulsory(Waajib) if one is present in Mina at the time of dawn (Fajr Saadiq) of the 13th. The time of pelting on the 13th of Zul-Hijjah is as follows:

3) 13thSunnah time – After zawwal till sunset

Makrooh time – After dawn till zawwal

In the enquired situation, you had pelted at the correct Sunnah times on the 10th, 11th and 12th of Zul-Hijjah.

In terms of stoning on the 13th of Zul-Hijjah, if you were not present in Mina at the time of dawn on the 13th, then stoning did not become compulsory for you. However, if you were present in Mina at the time of dawn on the 13th, then it became compulsory upon you to do so. If you did not do so, then a penalty of a Damm applies.

A Damm refers to the slaughtering a sheep, a goat or one seventh share of a large (Qurbani) animal within the boundaries of the Haram. (Muallimul Hujjaaj 187-188)
