How long is the Iddah period after a miscarriage?

Q. A man issued 2 Talaaqs to his wife whilst she was pregnant. She miscarried at 8 weeks. How long is her Iddah period?

A. If a woman was issued with one, two of three Talaaqs whilst she is pregnant, her Iddah period will terminate upon the birth of the child.

However, if later she miscarries, and it is determined that the limbs of the foetus were not formed, then she must observe the Iddah period of three menstrual cycles after the miscarriage. On the other hand, if it is determined that the limbs of the foetus were formed, then her Iddah period ended after the miscarriage.

The forming of the limbs refers to the forming of the hands, feet or fingers.
