Can Qurbani be done for new born children, family members and for Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam?

Q. Assalamualikum. I am from India and here people often give qurbani in the name of the new born, every member of the family (no matter fardh or not). Some people even give qurbani in the name of their dead elders and some even in the name of Prophet Muhammed (S.A.W). Is this all allowed or is it bid’ah?

A. It is permissible to slaughter an Udhiyyah/Qurbani animal on behalf of new born children, on behalf of living persons, on behalf of deceased persons and on behalf of Rasoolullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam. (Shaami 6/326-335)

It is also permissible to slaughter on behalf of each one of the above separately.
