Q. What type of animals can be slaughtered for Qurbani?

A. The Shariah has stipulated the type of animals and their ages permitted for slaughter during the days of Eid. The slaughtering of camels, cows/buffaloes and sheep/goats has been established from Rasoolullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam and the Sahaabah Radhiyallahu Anhum.

In terms of their ages, Rasoolullah Sallahu Alayhi Wasallam is reported to have said: “Sacrifice only a full-grown animal unless it is difficult for you, in which case you should sacrifice a six-month old sheep.” (Muslim)

The age determined for a full-grown camel is 5 years old, for a cow/buffalo, it is 2 years old and for a sheep/goat, it is one years old. The only concession given is for a six Month old sheep that looks similar to a full grown sheep of one years old. (Hidaayah 4/359)
