The status of kneeling and proposing in Islam

Q. At a family gathering, a boy went onto his knee in front of a girl holding a ring in his hand and proposed to her. Then he put a ring on her finger and the family applauded them. Is this custom against Islamic principles?

A. The act of kneeling on a knee to make a proposal of marriage followed by putting a ring on the finger is an Un-Islamic practice and an imitation of non-believers.

Apart from that, there are many violations of Shariah that occur when a proposal takes place in the above manner. As such, it is not permissible for Muslims to conduct their proposal in the above manner.
