Performing the Janaazah Salaah at the grave if it was not performed

Q. The Imaam left out one Takbeer in the Janaazah Salaah. Is the Janazaah Salaah valid? If not, what must be done now that the deceased is buried?

A. It is a requirement for the validity of the Janazaah Salaah that all 4 Takbeers are recited in the Janaazah Salaah. Therefore, if an Imaam leaves out any of the 4 Takbeers when performing the Janaazah Salaah, the Janazaah Salaah is invalid and incomplete. In that case, the Janazah Salaah must be repeated.

If the Janaazah Salaah was not repeated (or if no Janaazah Salaah was performed) and the deceased was buried, the Janazaah Salaah must be repeated and performed at the grave of the deceased as long as the body has not decayed. If the body has decayed (based on a professional opinion), there is no repeating or performing of the Janaazah Salaah. (Maraaqil Falaah 2/221- Hidaayah 1/90)
