Is it permissible to manufacture and sell items using Crocodile and Ostrich Leather?

Q. I am a manufacturer of bags, shoes and clothing. Can I manufacture and sell bags, shoes and clothing with crocodile and ostrich leather?

A. As a general rule, the usage and sale of any and all animal hides become purified after following a process of tanning with the exception of pig hides.

Therefore, if the hides of any animal is tanned with the exception of pig hides, their hides become purified regardless of whether or not the animal itself is permissible to consume or if the Shari’ process of slaughter was adhered to.

Thus, it is permissible to manufacture and sell bags, shoes and clothing with the hides or leather of crocodiles and ostriches after they are tanned. (Badaai’-us-Sanaai’ 1/85 – Hidaayah 1/23 – Al-Bahrur-Raaiq 1/105)
