Does one have to pay Zakaat on 9 Karat Jewellery?

Q. Does one have to pay Zakaat on 9 Karat Jewellery?

A. As a general rule, Zakaat is payable on Jewellery that predominantly contains Gold or Silver. Therefore, Zakaat is payable on 24-karat jewellery (100% gold or silver), 18-karat jewellery (75% gold or silver) and 14-karat jewellery (58% gold or silver).

In regards to 9-karat jewellery, it does not predominantly contain Gold or Silver (38% gold or silver). However, the Gold or Silver content can easily be removed by Jewellers through a process of refining (melting).

Thus, as the Gold and Silver content of 9-karat jewellery can be easily removed, it would be considered separately and individually from the jewellery. As such, Zakaat will be payable on 9-karat jewellery. (Shaami 2/302 – Al-Bahrur-Raaiq 2/245 – Fataawa Darul Uloom Zakariyya 3/109-111)
