Cupping Therapy and the performance of Salaah

Q. Does cupping break the Wudhu and is it okay to perform Salaah immediately after cupping?

A. In cupping therapy, blood is drawn and extracted from the body to the extent that blood exits the wound and is flowing. This nullifies and breaks one’s Wudhu. One will have to perform a fresh Wudhu to perform Salaah thereafter.

In regards to the blood that exits and flows out of the wound, the blood must be cleansed and removed from the body before performing Salaah. If a tissue paper or towel was used to wipe off the blood from the body and some blood or blood spots remain on the body, the performance of Salaah is not permitted if the blood is equivalent or more than the size of a Dirham.

A Dirham refers to the Islamic silver coin that was approx. 2.75cm in diameter. It is equivalent to the size of the old 50 cent coin and is 2mm larger than the current R5 coin (South Africa). (Lubaab 1/52 – Ahsanul Fataawa Vol. 1 pg. 89 – Fatawaa Raheemiyyah 4/23)
