Compensation (Kaffarah) for breaking an oath<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Q. Today I was angry on few small issues at home at some point when my temper got out of control I swore on Quran without holding it on my hand. I am getting married after 10 days and I swore that I will not do shopping for myself until the very last day before my wedding. After few minutes I realized what I did and now don\u2019t know what to do. My exact words were \u201c Quran ki Kasam I will not go for shopping..etc etc \u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Please guide me what to do as I have to do a lot of shopping for myself but I swore that I will not.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A.<\/strong> The statement \u201cQuran Ki Kasam I will not go for shopping\u201d is considered a valid oath. While such a statement is a valid and binding oath, you should avoid taking oaths on the Quran as it is not appropriate to do so. It is only appropriate to take an oath in one of the Names of Allah or one of His Attributes.<\/p>\n

In the enquired case, you should honor your oath as much as possible and avoid shopping until the night before your wedding. All you\u2019re shopping should then be done on the night preceding your wedding.<\/p>\n

However, if you cannot honor your oath and choose to go shopping before your wedding then this will necessitate a Kaffarah. <\/em>The kaff\u0101rah for breaking an oath is the feeding of ten needy persons twice a day for one day or providing them clothing. If one is not financially able to feed or cloth them then he must fast for 3 days in continuous succession instead.<\/p>\n
