The different types of charity (Sadaqah)<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Q. I want some information regarding sadaqa. when sadaqa money is collected in the masjid, can it be used in the masjid for musjid expenses. for example Imam pay, light\/water bill etc.?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A.<\/strong> When a request is made to the congregation of a Musjid to contribute Sadaqah towards the expenses of a Musjid, then such Sadaqah should be used for the expenses of the Musjid. However, there are two types of Sadaqah, namely;<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Optional Sadaqah<\/li>\n
  2. Compulsory Sadaqah.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Optional Sadaqah is where a person freely gives money to a good cause and hopes for a reward from Allah Ta\u2019\u0101l\u0101; this type of Sadaqah can be given to the Masjid and used for the expenses of the Musjid.<\/p>\n

    The second type of Sadaqah is one that is mandatory, whether through the initial dictates of the Shar\u012b\u2018ah such as Zakat and Sadaqat al-Fitr or through a person making it binding and compulsory upon himself such as taking a vow, Kaf\u0101rah etc. Any type of Sadaqah, which is compulsory upon a person, has to be given in the same avenues that a person would give for zakat, i.e. poor and needy; thus, it cannot be given to the Masjid or used for its expenses.<\/p>\n
