Many of our elders in the family had more than one wife. When one passed away they married another woman. Some married 3 times.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>What is the status of the relationships between the children born out of these marriages in Islam? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Children born from more than one marriage can be divided into two types:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong> Children who share a parent &#8211;<\/strong> Siblings who\u00a0<strong>share the <\/strong><strong>same mother <\/strong>(Uterine siblings), for e.g. one\u2019s mother married two husbands (at separate times) and she had children from both of them, or siblings who\u00a0<strong>share the<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>same father<\/strong>\u00a0(Consanguine siblings), for e.g. one\u2019s father married two wives and he had children from both wives. <strong>These siblings are counted as Mahrams whom you cannot marry<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Accordingly, observing the laws of\u00a0<strong>Hijaab<\/strong>\u00a0between them is\u00a0<strong>not necessary.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong> Children who do not share a parent &#8211;<\/strong>Siblings born of two different families who have been joined by marriage (step-siblings), for e.g. one\u2019s parent married a spouse who had children from a previous marriage. <strong>Step-siblings are not counted as Mahrams. <\/strong>Accordingly, observing the laws of\u00a0<strong>Hijaab <\/strong>between them\u00a0<strong>is necessary.<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>(Badaai-us-Sanaai 2\/257)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Allah Ta\u2019ala Knows Best<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mufti Ismaeel Bassa<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>themufti.com<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Islamic status of a stepchild&#8217;s relationship Q.
