Using Zakaat funds to expand a Zakaat recipients house

Q. A family member is a Zakat recipient. The house in which they live is confined and restricted for everyday life. Can I use Zakaat to expand their house for their convenience?

A. In the enquired case, if a Zakaat recipient gives you permission to expand (extend) his/her house with Zakaat funds, you may use Zakaat to do so. Alternatively, you may give them the Zakaat funds and they may utilise the same to expand (extend) their own house as they wish.
