Can a woman who has had a hysterectomy experience menstruation (Haidh)?

Q. A woman had her womb removed but she still has her ovaries. Recently, she started spotting. The doctor said that her body is trying to regulate her hormones again by discharging her eggs after doing half a cycle (from the ovaries down to the tubes and out). Is this considered haidh or istihaadha?Jazaakumullaahu Khairan for Mufti Sahebs time.

A. A hysterectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the womb (uterus).

If a woman undergoes a hysterectomy, the laws and rules of menstruation (Haidh) no longer apply to her including the prohibition for her to perform Salaah, observe Fasts, engage in conjugal relations etc.

This is because the fundamental requirement to considerer a discharge as menstruation (Haidh) is that the discharge must originate from the womb (Rahim) of a woman.

Therefore, any discharge experienced by a woman who has undergone a hysterectomy will be considered dysfunctional bleeding (Istihaadhah) and not menstruation (Haidh). (Manhal-Ul-Waarideen 120)
