Making up for missed (Qadha) Qurbani

Q. Can a person perform Qurbani on the 13th of Zul-Hijjah or after the days of Eid?

A. The time to perform Qurbani/slaughter is from the 10thof Zul-Hijjah after Eid Salaah until the sunset of the 12thof Zul-Hijjah. The best day to perform Qurbani is on the 10th of Zul-Hijjah, followed by the 11th and then the 12th of Zul- Hijjah. Accordingly, it is not permissible or valid to perform Qurbani on the 13th of Zul-Hijjah or later.

Therefore, if Qurbani was compulsory (Waajib) upon a person and one did not perform Qurbani during the days of Qurbani/slaughter, one must compensate for the missed (Qadha) Qurbani, by giving the value of a live Qurbani animal in charity. If one purchased a Qurbani animal, then one may give the live Qurbani animal in charity or its value. (Shaami 6/320, Ahnsanul Fataawa 7/480)

Note: Giving a live Qurbani animal in charity refers to given it as a whole animal to the poor and needy (Zakaat recipients) to do as they wish with it. It does not refer to one slaughtering the animal and then giving its meat in charity.
